Students’ indefinite hunger strike

The JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) also began an indefinite hunger strike on the campus, demanding resolution of several long-pending issues, including the withdrawal of proctorial inquiries initiated against students. The students’ union says these inquiries are being conducted to intimidate and suppress students.

Lack of response from administration

Vice-Chancellor Shanti Shree D Pandit of Jawaharlal Nehru University has not responded to the strike or the accusations made by instructors and students in a timely manner. This has further increased discontent among students and teachers, and they are vowing to fight for their rights.

Protest spread and support

More than a dozen professors from several departments joined the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) and staged a sit-in on the lawns of the School of Languages. Posters with slogans such as “Spread the truth about promotions”, “Promotions come with hard work”, and “Promotions are waiting” were put up at the protest site.

Allegations and demands

The protesters allege that promotions under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) of the University Grants Commission have been granted selectively and delayed in many cases since 2016. They are demanding transparency and fairness in the matter and want all deserving teachers to get timely promotions.

Both the teachers’ union and the students’ union are protesting in their own ways on the issue and say they will continue their struggle until their demands are met.
