Know DA Calculation Procedure
The All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI), which monitors retail prices, is the basis for calculating DA. Depending on whether an employee resides in an urban, semi-urban, or rural area, their DA percentage may change. For instance, a particular formula based on the AICPI index is used to determine the DA for central government employees.
Taxation of DA
Employees are required to include DA on their income tax returns since it is taxable. DA is taxed under the Income Tax Act’s “Income from Salary” section and is added to the base pay for salaried individuals. Additionally, DA is taken into account when determining retirement benefits like pensions and provident fund contributions.
DA for government workers is a set percentage of base pay that is updated twice a year to account for inflation. Like other allowances, it is still subject to full taxation. It affects the tax calculations for retirement benefits if they are included.

Other state’s DA hikes
Recently, DA hikes have also been announced in a number of states. For example, Chhattisgarh announced a 4% raise that would take effect on October 1 and raise the DA for state employees to 50% of their base pay. According to Chief Minister Vishnu DeoSai, this move will help almost 3.9 lakh workers.
In September 2024, Rajasthan raised the DA by 4%, bringing the total up to 46% from July 1. In September, Himachal Pradesh also announced a 4% increase that would help both state employees and pensioners. The increase went into effect in both states on July 1, 2024. The DA increases occur as the nation’s household budgets continue to be challenged by inflation.
