How Your Car Insurance Policy Can Rescue You At The Time Of Breakdown

There is nothing more frustrating than finding yourself stuck on the side of the road hours after you started on that road trip you had been planning for months. Worry not, if you have taken a roadside assistance cover from your car insurer – all you have to do is call the customer care number provided by them, and they will set you on your journey as soon as practically possible

What is roadside assistance cover?

Roadside assistance(RSA) cover is an add-on cover provided by almost all insurance providers in India. The insurer partners with a network of service providers that would assist you in case of a breakdown on the road. The insurer will arrange for the service on your behalf and have the service provider nearest to your location reach out to you with any service you may need.

What services are available under RSA?

The various services that you can avail through roadside assistance cover include:

  1. Towing service if the roadside assistance fails to make the car driveable again. Depending on your cover, there may be a limit on the free towing distance. If the car needs to be towed further, an extra fee would be charged.
  2. Battery jump-start.
  3. Replace flat tyres with a spare inside your vehicle. The service may arrange for a tyre in some cases, but it is always advisable to carry a spare when on a long drive.
  4. Lockout and locksmith services in case you are locked out of your car. They would first attempt to gain access using a pump wedge or a long reach tool. If these fail, then a locksmith would be engaged to craft another key or pick the lock.
  5. Fuel delivery service in case you run out of fuel on the road
  6. Extrication or winching services are provided of the vehicle gets constrained or stuck due to any reason.

The extent of coverage for each of these services would depend on your policy wordings. In some cases, an insurer may only cover part of the costs or costs up to a given threshold.

Should you get an RSA cover?

RSA cover is most suited for slightly older vehicles, as brand new vehicles have a lower probability of suffering a breakdown. However, you take frequent weekend trips into places that you are not very familiar with – getting an RSA cover may be the best way to reach out to a professional network in case of an emergency.

If you are commuting long distances, you should certainly consider getting RSA cover. The small additional premium that you pay for an RSA cover, can potentially save you big amounts in case a need arises. Further, the peace of mind from knowing you can always reach out to someone in case of a breakdown in priceless.
