PMAY-U 2.0: Here is some good news for the Indian citizens who live in the urban areas but belong to a financially weaker society and who cannot afford a living house. The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U 2.0), through this scheme the government will provide financial help to approximately 1 crore urban economically weak and middle-class families.
Under this PMAY-U 2.0 scheme, the government aims to provide financial help to the most eligible people of the States and Union Territories to construct, purchase, or rent a house at an affordable cost within 5 years.
PMAY-U 2.0 Launched
At a meeting on August 9, 2024, the Union Cabinet, presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, authorized the PMAY-U 2.0, which calls for an investment of Rs. 10 lakh crores. The PMAY-U, which was introduced on June 25, 2015, and terminated on December 31, 2024, will be replaced by the PMAY-U 2.0. PMAY-U is a component of the Central government’s Housing for All initiative, which offers all-weather pucca houses to eligible people in urban areas.
According to the statement, the government will provide ₹2.30 lakh crore fund under this scheme. In the first phase of the PMAY-U 2.0 scheme, 1.18 crore houses have been sanctioned, and more than 85.5 lakh residences have already been built and given to eligible beneficiaries. Through the PMAY-U scheme, the Central government aimed to provide all-weather houses to all the eligible people who belong to the financially weaker society in the urban areas.

Know Who Will be the Beneficiaries under the Scheme?
All the people who belong to the financially weaker section and who are under EWS, the low-income group (LIG), and the middle Income Group(MIG) in the urban areas and who do not have any pucca houses are eligible under the (PMAY-U) 2.0 scheme.
- Under this scheme, the yearly income of the EWS family shall not exceed Rs 3 lakh per year.
- Under this scheme, the yearly income of the LIG family shall not exceed Rs 6 lakh per year.
- Under this scheme, the yearly income of the MIG family shall not exceed Rs 9 lakh per year.
Total Funding Required Under the PMAY-U 2.0
- Under the PMAY-U 2.0 scheme to build 1 core house, the total investment required Rs 10 lakh crore over 5 years.
- Under this scheme, the central government/state government and Union Territories will provide Rs 2.30 lakh crore assistance.
- In the BLC and AHP component of the scheme, the government will assist Rs 2.50 lakh on each house construction.
- As we know it is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, so the burden of total finance will be shared by the Central government and the state government in a fixed ratio, which is as follows:
- The ratio of funds will be shared by the Centre and State as 60: 40 ratios.
- For the Union Territory having legislatures such as Delhi, Puducherry, and Jammu and Kashmir, the funding ratio will be shared as Centre and UT a 90:10 ratio.
- For the Union Territory, without any legislature, the total fund of 100% will be paid by the Central government.

- To apply for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban 2.0, first go to the official website of PMAY (Urban). – https://pmaymis.gov.in/
- After coming to the home page, the option of Citizen Assessment will appear, on which you have to click.
- After clicking, a new page will open, where you will see the link ‘Click for online application’, on which you will have to click.
- After this you have to register yourself and fill the application form and upload the scanned copy of all the necessary documents.
- Finally you have to click on submit, after which you have to download the application receipt and take its print out and keep it safe.
