UAE Hindu Temple
During Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to the UAE in 2015, the UAE decided to allocate land to build a UAE Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi. The Prime Minister’s visit was politically significant as he became the first Indian Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi to visit the strategic Gulf country in 34 years.
History of the BAPS Hindu Mandir
The history of the BAPS Hindu Temple began in 1997 during Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s visit to the UAE, when he envisioned a temple that would “bring together countries, cultures and religions” in Abu Dhabi. In August 2015, the UAE government decided to provide land to build a BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Viceroy of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, donated the land for the temple.
On 10 February 2018, the Founder of BAPS Foundation met Sheikh Mohammed and the Indian Prime Minister. The dedication of an agreement took place in front of the entire Royal Families of India and UAE and more than 250 local leaders. Prime Minister Modi expressed that the temple would be “that sacred place of encounter and harmony where humanity and harmony will unite”. Shila pujan (first stone dedication) for the temple took place on 11 February 2018.
The architectural style of the Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi
The BAPS Hindu Temple located in Abu Dhabi is the largest in West Asia and can accommodate 10,000 people. The height of the temple is 108 feet, the length is 262 feet, and the width is 180 feet. It includes other architectural features such as two ghumbad (domes), and seven shikharas (spires) – which distinguish the seven buildings of the UAE, 12 samarans, and 402 pillars. It also has marble carvings against the background of a sandblasted building.
The UAE Hindu Temple is built from more than 25,000 stone pieces made by skilled artists in India. Each peak has carvings depicting stories from the Ramayana, Shiva Purana, Bhagavatam, Mahabharata, and the lives of Jagannath, Swaminarayan, Venkateswara, and Ayyappa. The ‘Dome of Harmony’ displays the five natural elements – death, water, fire, air, and sky. There are also carvings of horses and camels that grace the seventh building that graces the UAE. The carvings of each horse and camel have been created without repetition.

The Ambassador expressed his excitement as the temple approaches completion, which shows that what previously seemed impossible has become a reality. Swami Brahmaviharidas, head of the BAPS Hindu Temple Project, provided information about the temple’s historical significance, construction process, and global impact. The temple is considered a powerful agent of religious and cultural harmony, receiving gratitude from the UAE and Indian leadership.
